Appreciation Thread: Pet Snakes

One of the biggest things people don’t understand about me is how I can like snakes. I used to never care for them either way, until I started seeing someone who was interested in them.

So many people are afraid of snakes, or they at least don’t like them for whatever reason. I’m assuming this fear and dislike is conditioned. In the media we always see snakes as hunters, mean, and venomous. A lot of people don’t realize how many different types of snakes there are and how some are completely tame. Take the ball python for example.

I have 4 of  them. These snakes are good as pets because they are tame, quiet, clean, and basically easy to take care of. You can hold them and let them crawl around. The only time they might show any aggression is when they are eating, but other than that, they are pretty chill. You just have to keep an eye on them if they are out in the open because they tend to wander off pretty quickly. Not to mention the fact that they are just beautiful.

Those are from my calendar photoshoot. I thought it would be really cool to have the snake make it into a decent shot with me without it looking awkward. Surpisingly after only about 50 frames with her, we got a few pretty good ones.

I also have a gray banded king snake. He is smaller, but still very chill.

Maybe they aren’t the most exciting pet to have, but I think they deserve a little more credit.

  1. Well:
It’s awesome you are not scared of snakes.
I’m glad you like them also.
Oh, wait. I’m not going there, lol.
I’ve shooed away a green garden snake b/c the ladies were all scared of it.

  2. I used to have a girlfriend with snakes. It was so cool that she had this exotic element about her. It totally fit with her personality too.

But I used to wake up in the night screaming. So it didn’t last…

  3. i had a 9 foot read tail named Claudia. donated her to a pet shop back in kenner before i got shipped to Japan. also had a dumerils boa and a ball. freaked my GF at the time out. i WOULD NOT recommend a red tail for most people, i needed 2 people to get her out of her enclose to clean it. but she only had to be fed fed one rabbit everuy other month.

    • The one I held a few weeks ago was pretty big. I couldn’t imagine owning a snake that size. The good thing about snakes is that they don’t eat very often.

  4. dumerils are perfect. they only get about 5 feet long, but the are somewhat heavy bodied. BEAUTIFUL markings though. after they they shed they have this amazing pinkish sheen. you should look them up.
