About Me
I was recently awarded the title of Miss Indiana International 2012. I will be making appearances and doing events throughout the year and competing for the title of Miss International in July 2012. My personal platform that I am advocating is Domestic Violence – Awareness & Prevention. In 2011 I was in a competition with 93.5/96.7 MAX and was featured as Miss June in their 2011 calendar. You can see a screen shot of us on their website or see the photos on the photographer’s site.
Education and Career
I am trying to work my way through college, studying magazine journalism at Ball State University. I would like to try to become the editor of a fashion or women’s lifestyle magazine, but I would also like to be able to branch off into other types of journalism like newspaper, broadcast, opinion, web content, etc. I love writing. It is the one thing I was really good at in high school and I also enjoyed the most, so I thought why not make a career out of it. In high school, I wrote for the school newspaper, managed their website, also wrote for and helped design the yearbook. I have been a writer for several e-zines over the years as well. Ever since then, I have been into writing and developing publications. I currently sell some of my work to websites like Associated Content and contribute to some e-zines and websites.
Volunteering
When I can, I like to volunteer for organizations that I have an interest in. I just recently signed up to volunteer for a domestic crisis center since the issue of domestic violence is very important to me. I will be taking calls and doing casework. I have also volunteered as a patient transporter for Ball Memorial Hospital for 2 years. I think it would be cool to do a new volunteering project every 6 months or so. It can be really fun and a great way to meet new people. It is also great experience to add to your resume.
Family
I am the oldest of 4 daughters. My mom and I get along really well and we are pretty close, even though she lives 3 hours away. My dad lives in Myrtle Beach on the same property I was born into. I don’t see him as much as I would like, but hopefully that will change soon. I have another father figure who was a boyfriend of my moms for almost 10 years, and who helped raise me and my sisters a great deal. I have always considered him as a dad too. My sister Danielle lives in the Myrtle Beach area with my dad and Grandmom, my other sisters Jessie is currently staying in Ohio with her boyfriend, and my youngest sister, Celine, lives in Brazil with her mother (we have the same dad, and both Celine and her mom are Brazilian natives).
Background
I was born in Garden City, South Carolina, about a half of a mile down the road from the beach. I lived there until I was five years old and then my mom moved my sister and me to Indiana 2 weeks before Hurricane Hugo destroyed the home we had just left. After the storm there, my grandparents built another house on the same property where they still are with my dad. Through the years, we traveled to visit there as often as we can, and I still do. Here in Indiana, I grew up in a rural area, surrounded by corn and cow fields – a much different lifestyle than how it was in in SC, but I got used to it and learned to like living there for the most part, although I think I much like the warmer climate in SC better.
Interests
Writing, pageants, volunteering, music, hoop dancing, going for walks, poetry, philosophy, animals, fashion, magazines, reading good blogs.
TV – King of Queens, Sex And The City, Big Bang Theory, America’s Next Top Model, Family Guy, South Park, and I still love watching reruns of Fresh Prince and Reba.
Music – Lots of classic rock and dubstep, but I like a lot of other stuff too. Disturbed, Metallica, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Nirvana, Rob Zombie, Linkin Park, Halestorm, Bad Company, Foreigner, etc. Certain tracks from pop and r&b like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney, etc. Huge love for dubstep, dance remixes, and anything electronic. Kraddy, UKF Dubstep, Mt. Eden Dubstep, Glitch Mob, Flux Pavillion, Nero, Rusko, Bassnectar, Chrispy, tons of others.
